THE TITAN WAS BITIN'
It pains me to type this entry...literally. Specifically, it pains me to type the i's and commas. That is because those strokes are made by the middle finger of my right hand. That is the finger that lost a little bit of skin off its end. Slight injury. Rather inconvenient.
Michele and I agreed to have little-ish gifts this Christmas. She gave me a fascinating set of vegetable peelers. She ordered them off the TV. They arrived a week after Christmas. This weekend I got a chance to use one of them. It set our day back several hours.
The peeler is great. It has serrated blades and works as advertised. The danger is the little plastic mandoline adapter. You insert the peeler into the mandoline board and instantly have a clever, and very effective veggie slicer. I know. I used it.
I slid a carrot across the sharp blades and was massively impressed. I showed Michele. It was wonderfully efficient...chick, chick, chick...thin coins of carrot piling up below. Watch this! Chick, chick, chick,...oh, nuts! One chick too many. I had nicked myself. And I am a woodworker and former machinist!
First I rapidly swore several times. Next I grabbed a paper towel and covered my injured finger. Third I peeked. Hmm. Fourth I peeked again. Hmm, I mean, CRUD! There was no usual flap of skin covering a little indiscretion with a sharp knife. There was an efficient gouge. I had chicked off a piece of skin that was 1/8" x 3/8". Not deep. Just deep enough to expose what thrives beneath the skin.
I realized something disgusting before Michele did, and picked a little sliver of myself out of the carrot pile, then threw it away in the garbage. Ohhh. Time for a little sitdown.
It was a slight injury. Don't be overly concerned. I'll recover nicely, and can type even now. The event brought back memories from my teen years, when I would cut some part of my hands and suffer more from regret than from pain. I hated then, and still hate the recovery period, when ordinary tasks became creative challenges.
I do like my Titan peeler, and have used it since the incident. I won't use the mandoline board again, but I'll keep it in anticipation of the class action suit.
Postscript: Thanks for your many comments, folks. I later posted a more positive entry on this unique peeler.

Oh, your poor finger! I hear that it is pretty standard for deli workers to slice themselves in their electric machine that is the same idea only 10x bigger! Talk about a lawsuit.
Speaking of lawsuit, I'd like you to gift me the mandoline board. That way if there IS a class action suit, I can get a "piece" of that action.
Thanks for the sympathy, and the offer to take the mandoline board. I'm keeping the board for now. I've parted with too many "pieces" for a bit.
american mentality?? something happens and first thing that comes to mind is lawsuit...that's why insurance is way up there...too costly...why can't people take responsibility for their own actions? how hard is it to be "careful." isn't that what we teach our kids?
I had to comment...If you were a regular reader, Leslie, you would know that what Don said was completely tongue-in-cheek. As was the comment by Tiffany as well! We may take what happened seriously, but we do know our faults and can joke about them.
I got my peeler the other week and used it to peel potatoes yesterday - and managed to injure a finger. It is only very slight but I now have four little tracks on the finger where the teeth cut. I love the device but it is so sharp!
We bought this at Target, and it broke on the first carrot. The little extra blade that juliennes, simply came right off. I can see where it was spot welded, but they apparently didn't use enough electricity to get a good weld. In fact, there are many parts on these devices that have spot welds. But what can you expect? It was made in China.
A scam when you order for $14.95 they show S&H of $7.99
What they don’t tell is $7.99 each = $15.98 or a total $30.97
But only if you say NO to all there add ons.
And then there is no way to cancel the order’
STAY AWAY
A SCAM. DON'T ORDER IT. I'm on the hook for $71.93 for the deluxe model and FedEx which I did not order. I'm in the process of contacting every government agency I can think of to report this fraud, which is exactly what it is.
Or just order it off ebay for $10 and save yourself the grief and $$. Don't be dumb like Alice!
American mentality? Try not be a moron and quit generalizing Americans.
Don. You are very funny and very amusing. If your finger has healed (and I hope it has by now) then I hope you will spend more time at your keyboard and make your anecdotes public. As for the peeler, this blurb was helpful because now if I do get one I'll be mentally and physically prepared for the stand-off with the mandolin attachment.
I recently came across this in my drug store, they have an "As seen on TV section" And i saw it, and instantly grabbed it. I had been looking for a good Y peeler for a while, and i had seen the commercials, and it fit the bill. I had had a plastic one, but the head broke off after the second use, and didn't have the serrations. I suck at peeling potatoes. It takes too much time, i end up mutilating the potato, and my hands hurt afterward. I used this, and was stunned. It's now FUN to peel potatoes! It works great.
This didn't come with the mandolin, which is no big deal, since i have a full size one anyway (The thing they missed was that the big ones have a HAND GUARD, so as not to cut oneself) Sorry to hear about your injury. I don't use the Julian blade thingy, but in my opinion it was $15 well spent. It's solidly constructed, sharp, and super easy to use.
After watching the commercial on TV I entered my information online. I thought I was ordering the same on as shown on TV, this is deceiving. It asked if I wanted to upgrade to the professional peeler for $9.99 extra and I said ok. After I saw the total charges on the last page for $70.93 I was stunned, I DID NOT click summit. The next morning I saw that the company had the charge pending on my account. I phoned my bank and the representative removed the charge and suggested I cancel my card which I did in case they tried to run it through again. I called the company also, the recording gave me an option to hold or have them phone back. Three times I tried holding only to be disconnected so finally I opted to have them call back which finally they did. I explained to the representative what happened and she put me on hold again for ten more minutes while she talked to her supervisor (she said) then came back to tell me it had already been shipped but I could return it and then get a refund on the charges. I'm glad I canceled my card because I cannot count on a company who does business like this to refund anything. (Read other reviews on some of their other sites.)
Watch out ordering anything online, there are so many companies who do business this way and it takes a lot of time and effort to correct it when it wasn't the customer who did anything wrong. I hope this company gets a class action lawsuit for their mal-practices.
Beware...........
I JUST used this today and seems like I made the same injury with this peeler as the original poster. OUCH. Seriously.... ouch. I have a jagged little sliced off the side of my finer from the peeler slipping. Please, be very careful with this. It works great.... but it is NOT to be used by kids or "us" clumsy adults (meaning me).
Thank goodness for waterproof band-aids.
Thanks Don & Michelle! Because of your review, I have just ordered one. Since there is no pending lawsuits as of yet, I can still get a piece of the action! ;-)
Yo Elizabeth they screwed me with that one too Im still waiting for a refund for the Deluxe one and I had better get it soon, What a crooked company and us ding dongs that went for it.. It sounded too good to be true, Guess it was, Man they billed me right off the bat.. Man that pissed me off and off to the Bank I went.. In fact I still am waiting for the refund as you said you called many times and they didnt answer and they did the same thing to me so soon as i got it i sent it back..
I hope this kills it for them there robbers and should pay a class action suit against them for all the money they took from us good folks!!
