Geek Math
Huh? Since when does "1 + 1 = 10"?
Since the digital age. Computers speak in binary (among other languages), and binary is made up of only 1's and 0's. So, all of the regular numbers (integers) we use are represented by a series of 1's and 0's. Kind of like writing in code. Here is a quick list of integers 0-10 converted to binary:
- 0 = 0000 0000
- 1 = 0000 0001
- 2 = 0000 0010
- 3 = 0000 0011
- 4 = 0000 0100
- 5 = 0000 0101
- 6 = 0000 0110
- 7 = 0000 0111
- 8 = 0000 1000
- 9 = 0000 1001
- 10 = 0000 1010
So, drop all the preceding 0's and you get 1 + 1 = 10!
Next time someone says 1 + 1 = 2 you can correct them and say that sometimes 1 + 1 = 10. They'll either consider you a smart alleck or someone who thinks outside the box.
As an alternative, you can wear a shirt (or use a coffee mug) and see how many people actually understand it. Could be a great conversation starter.
Another in a large collection of "fun facts" swimming around in the ol' gray matter....

Well, I'd like to thank you for this educational post, but instead I'm going to rant.
Thanks to this post (and my sharing it with My Mukor) I was treated to a 2-HOUR long discussion of all things binary. My Mukor being a computer programmer geek explained to me the philosophical essence of the values 1 and 0. He, of course, LOVED your post.
My head hurts. :)
Sorry about the 2 hour discussion giving you a headache... Hey, here's another fun fact: drinking a large glass of Gatorade is supposed to cure a headache! I usually just stick with the aspirin myself.
If Mukor is a computer geek, see if he has ever made or heard of a "joule thief". I haven't made one myself... yet. I plan on trying it once I get the parts together and have some spare time.
My husband was chatting with me today while he was at work, and he sent me a message he knew I would understand... NOW.
There are exactly 10 people in the world: those who understand binary jokes, and those who don't.
I want to thank you again for introducing me to this underground world of geek-dom.
