If You Ain't Strong, You Gotta Think More

We went up north to the cottage (which we've been trying to sell for four, FOUR years!) to check on it.  Michele had a good idea:  bring back the little leather recliner and put it in our little computer room at home.  Good idea, but a bit of a challenge.

Recliner.JPGThe chair was on the second floor of the cottage.  The stairway has a landing and a right angle turn.  How were the two of us, who aren't especially suited for lifting and heaving, going to move that awkward piece of furniture?  Simple, my dear Watson...we laid it on its back on a piece of carpeting that was large enough for each of us to grip, and slid the chair down the stairs.  Gravity helped the descent.  Maneuvering was simple.  The chair and the walls were protected. Beautiful.

One problem came up.  The chair was too wide to get through the door to the garage unless we turned it on its side and woogied it through...and we didn't have the physical oomph to woogy it.  So the door came off its hinges and we managed to slide the chair into the garage and finally into the car.

Recliner reclined.JPGWhen we got home we faced three doorways and tricky twisting.  I didn't want to remove three doors, so I had incentive to come up with a workable solution.  Hard work does that to me.

I reclined the recliner and measured it in that position.  It was obvious that the chair would be much more manageable if we could move it on its side, while it was extended.

I found an old sheet, and we tipped the well-traveled recliner onto the sheet, where it lay on its side in full recline.  There was plenty of sheet for us to wrap around our wrists and lift.  The move through the doorways and hallway and around corners went swimmingly.

Aren't we clever little dickens?

Ah, the ole' heavy-object-on-the-sheet routine! Actually, I never would have thought of that. But, if you were lugging it up stairs on a sheet, how did you do that without it slipping down the stair when the sheet was pulled taut?

Luckily, we didn't need to move the chair up stairs when we got it home. We have a walkout ranch.

However, if we did need to move it upstairs I would go back to the piece of carpet, which has a fabric side and a rubberized side. Put the chair on the rubberized side, and it won't slip out.

You are a thoughtful, logical lady. I like that.
