R is for Rhinoceros

first wash rhino.JPGHere is the big guy, Rhino!  For whatever reason, I really have been looking forward to doing this fella a lot.  As I got near the end of the painting, I did some minor adjusting to his feet.  They were too small for his size, and I widened them.  This is the first very watery wash.

This is the second wash, with me spending more time after the wash, on the face detail.  I could move around to different areas because his face is rather large with distinct areas, so one area could dry as I worked on another, blending as I went.  You can blend with a brush that is wet, not dripping, with just water, no paint.

The Rhinoceros, big and bold and I think rather magestic.  This picture actually is the finished one, with more washes and then lots of detail added, colors darkened and areas lightened, such as around the top of his right front leg.  To lighten, again you can use a brush with no paint, but more wet than dry.  As you lift color off, you rinse your brush repeatedly, otherwise you just keep muddying the spot you want lighter.  I also used a dry brush, meaning I took out as much water as I could, then dipped into the paint color I wanted.  On his side and stomach, and on his head and back I added the colors, continually adding more color so he looks as rough and dirty as I am sure this animal usually is.  This Rhinoceros is an example of a White Rhino.

Gorgeous! This shows you what an artist you are since I didn't notice anything wrong with the feet until you pointed them out :).

However, I'm so used to there being birds on the rump of rhinos that I had forgotten how amazing these animals are.

Thanks, Tiffany! I've started to LOOK for a comment from you...Don't let me down...I do like to see if anyone likes them or not! Really never have heard too much of the latter, thank goodness. Don keeps me focused if I get off kilter with the drawings, and perspective. And I have forgotten that you do see Rhinos with birds on their backsides!
