The Polar Bears Will Die

Last night we all went over to Grandma Boo's house so Alex could install a new faucet for her. Michaela and Carrie brought all the toys they could fit into one of our reusable shopping bags. They were prepared to entertain themselves while Daddy played plumber and I ventured out to the store with Lily and Grandma Boo.

Before I could leave though, Alex wanted to look under the sink and see if he had everything he needed to get this job done. After inspecting the old faucet and reading the directions to the new one he discovered he needed to get some parts from the hardware store. Of course! A project can never be completed without at least one run to the hardware store! We decided he would take Michaela and Carrie with him and I would go out with Lily and Grandma Boo.

As we prepared to leave I went around to the various table lamps in the living room and turned them off. Grandma Boo came into the living room and said, "Oh, you don't have to turn off all of the lights. You can leave a couple on so it's not so dark when Alex gets back with the girls." Michaela was with me as we were about to switch off the last light .

I said to my mom (Grandma Boo) that it was a waste of electricity to leave the lights on and it wasn't necessary to do that. Michaela looked at me and quietly but very seriously said, "The polar bears will die."

mother polar bear.jpgMichaela is very passionate about animals and the environment. She has learned at home and school various ways to protect our Earth and everything on it. One of the things she always remembers is to turn off lights when you do not need them. She saw a special on television once that explained how the use of electricity impacts the environment and causes global warming. In turn, this global warming is having a serious impact on the polar bears. Although many of the details of global warming were above Michaela's level of understanding, she got the big picture that even she can help save the polar bears.

Now if we can only get everyone to be as passionate about saving the polar bears as Michaela is!
